- If you can tolerate unnecessary and extensive philosophizing prose, and big words, take a chance on this book. Otherwise, no.
The story idea is very interesting, creative, and was one of the things that kept me reading. And I came to like the main characters. There were a minimum of obvious typos, which is always helpful. However...
As other readers have said, the author uses very big words, where simpler ones would suffice. Often, the use of bigger, more complicated words meant the author had to write more, in order to make them work. Also, there were many chapters and long expository passages -- no dialogue, no characters -- where the author writes philosophically...who knows I had to skip it. These chapters and passages added nothing to the story, did not move it forward, and were not entertaining. There are novels where this kind of device works, authors who can effect it. Not this book, not this author.
A good example would be the movie "War of the Worlds", where it opened with a faceless monologue, and ended with one. Perhaps that's what this author was trying to do. He should stop that.
The author also allowed his personal politics to enter into the story. Characters who voted one way, were intelligent, and clearly approved of by the author. Those who vote the other way, were unintelligent, and clearly disapproved of by the author. The characters whose politics the author approves of are the ones who survive the apocalypse. It's great that characters have opinions and take political sides. But when the politics and opinions are not necessary for the story, it's distracting.
The story takes its time in allowing the crisis to unfold. I prefer this technique. But in this case, it took far too much time. The author must live in the Southern US, and love it. The descriptions are wonderful, and just as I remember it. His descriptions of other scenes and scenarios sounded accurate and compelling. The medical science was of course, accurate. Some of the other science, not as much. - For the most part, this story hummed right along.... I would get immersed and lose track of time (a plus imho)... then suddenly, one might say needlessly, there would be several pages of $10 words.... sometimes it aided the story slightly, but mainly it seems the author just adores throwing them in.... in chunks.... which would be fine.... I actually had to look a couple up to make sure I understood their useage(again , a plus imho).... the problem was the misuse of your and you're.... several times in fact.... which strikes me as horribly at odds with those $10 words.... up until the point of "It's aliens! sucking our brains!" portion of the story, I would have overlooked both issues, but the ending seemed... forced? rushed?.... not as well thought out as the rest of the story.... BUT.... I look forward to the next book, at the very least....
- Run! There is a giant ball of flame in the sky!
The Meteorite starts fast, holds you tight, and carries you on an unforgettable ride. Hard to put down would be an understatement. Set among several different story lines with extraordinary characters, The Meteorite takes the reader on a worldwide adventure. While it appears bleak for mankind, will these extraordinary characters be able to save it? One quickly becomes invested in their well-being, and though heartbreaking to loose some of them as the story progresses, those that remain at the end give one hope for humanity in the face of a very uncertain future.
While Dr. Ross tells a kick-ass story, it would be hard to miss that there is intended greater meaning within this work. Regardless of one’s view of social policy, Ross’s thoughts on conservatism are beautifully delivered and certainly worthy of any thinking person’s consideration. There is passion in his message, so much so, that it becomes infectious (pun intended). However, the nuance and historical context highlight this author's mastery of the topic and place his work among the great conservative novelists and thinkers like Rand, Scruton, and Kirk.
Lastly, throughout the book, the author includes several interludes that provide background information about various topics from the story. It is here that Ross’s writing talent and breadth of knowledge truly shine. These are beautifully written, and own their own, would be excellent essays. That the author has found a way to include them in the broader context of the book, in such a natural way, adds greatly to the work, and were this reviewer’s most appreciated aspect of the piece. - Just finished the book and I am hoping there is a sequel. I became fond of the characters very quickly and wondered how they would do in the story. I looked forward each morning to my read along with a cup of coffee. I would think about the characters during the day. The story ending did not disappoint. Just a really great read.
- Throughout history there have always been a few who could see through the superficial to the basis of humanity. The author is one such person and beautifully weaves philosophy with science fiction.
- I do a lot of reading and this is the best writing i've had the pleasure to read in years. The vocabulary is glorious with unusual words used perfectly. I only hope for more from this wonderful author.
- Interesting theory and well written book. Kept my attention as I looked forward to what was coming next.
- Great story. Couldn't put it down. I hope this author puts out more s.
